Plymouth is situated on the banks of the River Tamar, on the border between Devon and Cornwall. The city faces Plymouth Sound, a large natural harbour which combined with the sheltered waters of the estuary have played host to the Royal Navy for hundreds of years. Plymouth's maritime history stretches back to the middle ages and the city has been the base and embarkation point for many seafaring legends, including; Drake, Raleigh, Frobisher and Captain Cook. The Pilgrim Fathers sailed from the quay in the Mayflower enroute for the new world. Present day Plymouth is a lively, thriving city of 240,000 people - it is the largest city in the Westcountry and is the regional hub for transport and many public services. There is currently a large redevelopment of the city centre underway, which when complete, will provide enlarged and improved shopping facilities - now open.
